Blowtorches – Coleman

COLEMAN BLOWTORCHES

These were made by Butler Metal Products in Canada. Because the company name changes over time, the affixed decals are useful for approximate dating of the blowlamps. Pacific Islands Monthly in August 1949 had an advertisement that showed a few different Coleman blowtorches. By 1950 Coleman advertisements show the blowlamps as part of a complete grouping of pressure appliances.

Coleman 301    (Kerosene 2/3 pt – about 1948/49)
Notes: An interesting blowtorch with the only Coleman decal which doesn’t mention the manufacturer; Butler. The pump body is set into the tank and cannot be unscrewed like most pumps. The priming well is also unusual by being set in a raised part of the fount. This blowtorch, from the collection of Dwayne Hanson,  is one of a handful of kerosene blowtorch models made for Coleman; most were gasoline.

Coleman 91   (Gasoline 1 pt – 1940s)
Notes:  Judging by the decal stating Butler Stampings and Machine Screws Ltd this is an early Coleman 91. The blowtorch is from Ron Zemancik’s collection.

Coleman 92   (Gasoline 2 pt – abt 1950s)
Notes: This Coleman model 92, from Dwayne Hanson’s collection is a quart blowtorch with a horizontal burner. Being made by Butler Metal Products Ltd in Canada it has many similarities with other Butler made blowtorches such as the Dominion 500 and the Butler 100. A large priming cup is a prominent feature on the model 92 as is the control valve metal wheel. A hook to hold a soldering iron in place is also prominent.

Coleman 102   (Gasoline 2 pt – abt 1940s)
Notes: This blowtorch was formerly in Roland Chevalier’s collection and the mention of Butler Stampings on the Coleman decal indicates an approximate 1940s manufacture. The tank is filled by removing the pump assembly. The valve control wheel is the pressed metal type.

Coleman 202 (Gasoline 2 pt – abt 1950s)
Notes: This Coleman 202 blowtorch is a quart capacity gasoline blowtorch from the collection of Roland Chevalier. Made by the Butler group the torch has groups of 3 holes spaced around the burner and a ‘cool Bakelite regulating valve wheel’. A soldering iron hook and a filler plug in the base (bottom image), along with a clear varnished handle complete the torch. The red tabs of a support stand are not part of the torch.

Coleman 5110 (LP torch)
Notes: This Coleman LP fueled canister Model 5110 blowtorch was marketed by Coleman’s International Division. The blowtorch was purchased by Gary Carpenter, whose collection this is in, from a former Coleman employee’s family in Wichita, Kansas. Paperwork that Gary got with the blowtorch was dated in 1958 & 1960. Utility, pin point, and heavy duty burners were available for this 5110 model as well as Models 5111 and 5112.
